“Painted during my first visit to Morocco, in the coastal town of Essaouira. This town was like a sanctuary - especially after being in Marrakech for a couple of weeks. It was so low key, and the people extraordinarily friendly and open. I had a lot of lovely conversations while painting this day - mostly Moroccans, and also a few tourists. One Belgian gentleman talked to me for quite some time, and only as he was walking away did he let me know his house was just on the right, before the blue door. The person I remember the most vividly was a small local girl who could not take her eyes off of my paints, nor keep her fingers out of my palette. She was very sweet, and I ended up giving her an extra small panel to play with, so she would not reach up and put her hands into my painting. I stayed a week in Essaouira, overwhelmed by the beauty and the power of the ocean there. In the end, this was my favorite painting from my three weeks in Morocco. It is a place I’m sure I will return to, and do many more paintings.”
